My Coaching Trip Report

Thank you all so much for your prayers and financial support. This was without a doubt, the best week of my life. I was able to pour out all my years of training and experience with the group of people I've most wanted to encourage.

Since I first went to China in 1984, I knew that I wanted to make a global impact with my life, but now I know how I will do it...by encouraging individuals and teams to discover and live their calling and passion among the unreached. Let me give a few highlights of the trip and you'll see what I mean.

HIGHLIGHTS

-spoke to over 70 young people from 11-18 and encouraged them to discover and live their God-given passions.

-Administered the Clifton Strengths Finder to 35 teens and adults

-Individually coached and encouraged 25 teens, adults and families who are living and serving in the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and Europe.

-Arranged several potential future trainings with teams and specific leaders.

-Arranged future individual coaching sessions with workers from various regions.

August 24-27- I'll be attending a conference with YWAM Los Angeles called the Global Target Network. I'm an associate staff member in this ministry which seeks to help YWAMers transition after they've arrived home by helping them serve more effectively in their churches as well as encouraging them and coaching them to continue living what they've learned during their DTS or other YWAM ministry school.

I covet your prayers as I seek to follow up with all the people I met in on my trip and schedule a time to work with them.

15 “After he was crowned king, he returned and called in the servants to whom he had given the money. He wanted to find out what their profits were. 16 The first servant reported, ‘Master, I invested your money and made ten times the original amount!’

17 “‘Well done!’ the king exclaimed. ‘You are a good servant. You have been faithful with the little I entrusted to you, so you will be governor of ten cities as your reward.’

1 Samuel 17
David and Goliath
David's confidence that God had prepared him for his confrontation with Goliath. when faced with Goliath's taunts. When he was questioned by Saul as to his ability to confront Goliath he responded.

33 Saul replied, "You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a boy, and he has been a fighting man from his youth."
34 But David said to Saul, "Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37 The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." Saul said to David, "Go, and the LORD be with you."

David was able to clearly recount his experience as a shepherd. He applied the lessons he had learned to his present situation with Goliath. He was filled with confidence because of his earlier accomplishments.

Ephesians 4

1As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.
2Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
3Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope when you were called— 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
7But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.

God has assigned each his work

1 Cor 3: 5 What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. 6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. 7So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. 8The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. 9 For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building.
10By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds.
(Paul was clear that he built the foundation. He refers to himself as an "expert builder"

Acts 13:36

Acts 26:19
19"So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven.
28Then Agrippa said to Paul, "Do you think that in such a short time you can persuade me to be a Christian?"
29Paul replied, "Short time or long—I pray God that not only you but all who are listening to me today may become what I am, except for these chains."
30The king rose, and with him the governor and Bernice and those sitting with them. 31They left the room, and while talking with one another, they said, "This man is not doing anything that deserves death or imprisonment."
32Agrippa said to Festus, "This man could have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar."

Paul's decision to appeal to Caesar radically changed the course of his final days. He would have been freed sooner.

Col 3:12-14
12Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

God asks us to bear with one another. This is made easier when we understand each other better. As humans, we are always seeking to make sense of our environment. When I understand more about others, I am better able to separate the moral/character elements of behavior from the preference side of behavior. This goal is not to excuse bad behavior, but rather to increase understanding as we seek to deal with bad behavior.

HOW IT WORKS! The Road of Dreams.

SESSIONS 1-2 (2 hrs)

STAGE ONE

(Getting acquainted and Establishing Coaching Goals)

Simply put, we hang out and get to know each other. Coaching is about YOU and it is a personal process, so I'm committed to spending time learning about you and allowing you to get to know me. This stage is more informal than the other stages and typically occurs in our initial session. of one 2 hour meeting

We will work through a detailed Orientation Questionnaire that I will send you before our first meeting. You are free to complete all or any of the sections you feel are relevant to your coaching goals. We establish your general coaching goals. Most of these will become clear as we discuss the questionnaire.

SESSIONS 3-8

STAGE TWO
(Developing Self-Awareness)

We explore more deeply such questions as: Who are you? What makes you unique? How have your life experiences shaped your dreams and passions? How well do you understand and appreciate your own special qualities? Why are you on the planet? What will your legacy be? What would your ideal day be like? How has your view of God and your spirituality shaped your life?

The Clifton StrengthsFinder and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator are the two principal assessments used in this stage. We will spend 1-2 sessions discussing your results from these instruments.

(NOTE: If you have already taken both of these, you will want to send me your results as soon as we begin coaching. I will often refer to the information in your StrengthsFinder report during our sessions to help you, and me understand you better.

SESSIONS 9-12

STAGE THREE
(Implementation, or "Where the Rubber Meets the Road")

Whereas Stage 1 and 2 require inward reflection and discovery, Stage 3 involves the practical implementation of your increased Clarity. You decide where you want to be in 5, 10, 25 years and we work backwards to today. Are you on course for your destiny? We evaluate your current life circumstances in light of your calling. Living situation, job, friends, hobbies, living location, habits, and any other relevant factors. Living your calling is both a spiritual/philosophical activity as well as a practical one. You can't have one without the other.

Step by step and decision by decision, I help you take the baby steps you need to be able to confidently proclaim, "I'm living my dreams, today!" Are they fully formed yet? Of course not. Nothing of value happens overnight. But, you ARE living your dreams, nonetheless.
This stage includes such activities as researching and applying to grad schools, attending special interest meetings, starting a blog on your topic of interest, join associations, attending conferences etc.. You weekly homework will involve doing something, anything, to get you moving forward. Your rate of progress will depend on many factors, but you will determine it. I'll help you take practical steps necessary to turn your dream into reality. We'll design the steps together until you're virtually guaranteed to reach your goal.

SESSIONS 13-18

STAGE FOUR

(Solidifying and maintaining the Plan)

In this stage we evaluate how the implementation plan is progressing and make the necessary modifications to turn the plan into a lifestyle. We discuss what's been working and what we need to modify. Perhaps as you've begun to take action, you've gained more self-awareness and you now want to modify the direction you're heading. This is perfectly okay. Discovering and implementing your dream is a process. The key is that you're moving in the right direction...in the direction of your dream, and there's no turning back.

STAGE FIVE

(Maintenance and Growth)

This stage is the maintenance and expansion stage. You're now beginning to see your dream become reality. It's alive and growing. I can help you push it to the next level as we meet on an "as needed" basis.

Coaching teens is vitally important because they have the fortuitous opportunity to learn about what they do best before they make the important decisions about college, work and career. As a public school teacher for over 15 years, I've worked with thousands of teenagers and young adults. I have special passion and insight that can help your teen understand to help them discover their personal mission. Working with teens is different that working with older adults because they haven't had as much life experience.

I use basically the same approach as I would with an adult, but I involve the family in the process. After working with your son/daughter, we will have a debriefing session where I will involve you, the parents, in the conversation. The ultimate goal is to create a "Strengths-Based" family, where each member of the family is appreciated for their area of greatest strength and the family works together as a team.

Family Coaching

FAMILY COACHING

The goal of family coaching is to create a family unit where each member is using and appreciated for his/her areas of greatest contribution and where the family unit is structured for maximum love, appreciation and effectiveness.

Family coaching follows the same basic steps as individual coaching. Individual coaching is conducted with each family member as requested, with special attention given to help each member understand and appreciate the contribution of each member.

Each member's assessment results will be explained for the other family members to understand. A family chart is made where the family is looked at. This activity works as an effective initiator to a discussion of family dynamics and how each person works together.

Follow-up discussion where each family member talks about their thoughts about the new information they've learned. Action plans are worked on for each member.

Continued action plans and family plans worked on. Family dynamics discussed.

Follow-up meetings are scheduled as needed.

But I didn’t care a lick about Economics. How I wish, someone would have intervened in my life and helped me see how to use my college education to further my dreams in life...I now see how these difficult times forged my passion to suppport others as they seek to live out their dreams."

After I finished my B.A., I began traveling the world with various Christian organizations, meeting new people, learning new languages and working in teams, and encouraging others to live their dreams and to know the God of dreams. But because I didn't see how to turn these short term experiences into a lifestyle of traveling and speaking, I reluctantly moved on. In 1989, I joined the ranks of inner-city teaching. Working in some of the toughest schools in South Central Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Virginia, I learned Spanish and worked with hundreds of young people from ages 7-18. Initially I loved the adventure and the cross-cultural aspect of working in the classroom, but I could never successfully work within the daily routine of teaching. After 10 years of teaching, I still hated doing lesson plans, I was great at exciting the students about learning, but hated the necessary follow-through. During my teaching career, I quit 4 separate times. I desperately wanted to find another career, but I had no clue where to look or how to do it.

Tim's a dream archaeologist, intuitively snooping for destiny clues, unearthing them, and, cleaning them off, and displaying them for the world to see.

In 1997 I started a Master’s degree in counseling at Arizona State University. Three years later I graduated and shipped off to begin a Doctorate in Psychology from Regent University in Virginia Beach. I loved the classes but had no motivation to be a therapist. Hmmm. What to do? Then in 2002, I learned of a field referred to as “life-coaching”. I enrolled in Transformational Leadership Coaching in Virginia Beach and learned that life-coaching fit me better than traditional therapy. The modern day field of psychology focuses on what’s wrong with people and tries to fix it. Life-coaching is more akin to the field of Positive Psychology, which seeks to ask “What is Right with people?”. Now this, I could do.

Tim has the uncanny ability to see someone’s dream with such clarity it is hard for him to wait to see it happen.

I’ve been a long time advocate of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator as a way to understand people’s unique personality preferences. I’ve trained many different groups in team effectiveness using this instrument. Then in 2005 I discovered the Strengths Finder. It gave me a fresh perspective and a new language to describe individual uniqueness. Now, a year later, I use both of these instruments to help people understand, integrate, and apply what makes them unique. During this past year, I’ve been learning how to use my strengths each day in order to live a more fulfilling and rewarding life.
